Aberystwyth University Rating Appeal

The Task

We were instructed by Aberystwyth University to investigate the various rating assessments on its three campuses and other University buildings in the town and submit appeals where appropriate.

The University first opened it’s doors in 1872 in what is now known as Old College on the sea front.

The University has subsequently expanded considerably and unusually occupies three campuses as well as other buildings. The appeal required the assessment and valuation of some 105 buildings and facilities including the purpose built lecture theatres, laboratories, sports halls, indoor swimming pool, all weather sports pitches and running track, plant breeding centres, extensive greenhouses, art galleries, drill hall, on-site public house and boat house.

The Outcome

Following detailed negotiations with the Valuation Office, reductions were negotiated in all of the appeals submitted resulting in substantial savings for the University.

Stephen Holt, Partner at Haslams commented “A rating appeal of this scale presented a number of challenges not least due to the sheer number and variety of buildings occupied by the University, but I was pleased to assist the University with this case and deliver a positive outcome for them.”
