Building for the Future

Gambia is the smallest independent country in Africa, and one of the poorest in the world. Haslams Chartered Surveyors recently sponsored Will Morris, Graduate Surveyor to travel to Gambia to take part in charity work building medical facilities in Serrakunda, the largest town in the country.

The charity known as G.A.M.B.I.A (Generating Aspirational Medical Buildings in Africa) was set up in order to fund construction work at the medical centres, with volunteers spending two weeks each year helping to improve health facilities that are desperately needed in the area.

This year the team of 14 joined forces with the locals to help construct a number of facilities including a new kitchen and a waiting room area, while also improving the current buildings.

Will commented “The going was tough, particularly as the majority of the volunteers were having to adapt from artic conditions in the UK to 40°C heat, while at the same time mixing cement by hand! It was however very much worth it and a hugely rewarding experience.”
